• Simple Guide to Building Your Own Office Desk

    Office Desk

These days, getting a good-quality office desk can cost you a significant sum of money. Well, the good news is that you don’t have to settle for buying a ready-made desk anymore; rather, you can shell out far less cash and build your own. You don’t need to be overwhelmed either; building a simple desk that does the job is a lot easier than you think, and you don’t need years of experience either. The first step, of course, is to measure out the space you have to work with and make a decision on how big you would like the desk to be. The second step is to buy the wood and the other tools you need. Once you have everything you need, you just need to cut the desktop and the legs from the pieces of wood you bought. Then it’s just a matter of putting everything together with some screws to get yourself a beautiful desk that will last you for a long time to come.

    Step 1: The Desktop

Measure out the Area Where You Will Put the New Desk

Alright, the first step is to actually measure out the area where you are planning to put your new desk. Once you’ve made the decision on exactly where you are going to place your new desk, you just need to use a tape measure to measure out the length of your new desk. Make sure to write out the measurements because you’ll need them later on.

If you find out that there isn’t enough space for a full, proper desk, then you might want to consider installing a floating desk on the wall. The great thing about floating desks is that you don’t need much space and they only need one, perhaps two pieces of wood at most.

Make a Decision on How Big You Want Your New Desk to Be

Obviously, you want to make sure that the desk you are going to build is big enough for what you are planning to use it for, but at the same time, you want to make sure that it is an appropriate size for your new office space. If you are working in a tight space, then it is important to make sure that you remember that you will need to leave some space around the desk for your new office chair.

If you are planning on having other kinds of storage in your new office, such as a filing cabinet, then of course you are going to want to keep this in mind when you are figuring out the dimensions of your new desk.

    Cut Up the Wood

Once you’ve measured out and decided exactly how big you’d like your new desk to be, the next step is to get the wood and cut it up into the right dimensions. The first thing you’d do is take a pencil and mark out exactly where you need to cut the board and then either use a manual saw or an electric saw and cut the board into size. It’s as simple as that.

If you don’t want the hassle of having to put together several pieces of wood to make your desktop, then a really good way to keep things simple is to just buy a single piece of plywood, which you can then use as your desktop. Yes, it’s going to cost you a little more but then you’ll completely avoid the hassle of having to cut up the wood.

    #Sand the Wood Down

Once you’ve got your desktop cut to size, you are going to want to get your hands on some rough sand paper and rub it all over the desk, including the edges. You want to keep rubbing until the surface of the wood is no longer smooth. This will help immensely when you paint the wood later on, because it will make your life 100x easier.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that this process of sanding down the desktop manually can be a lot of hard work and at the same time, it can be quite time-consuming. A good alternative (which will cost you a bit more money) is to get yourself an electric sander. This will not only be a lot faster, but will also require significantly less energy to get the job done.

The easiest option of all is to decide that you just want to keep the natural look of the wood. This will mean that you can completely skip this step of sanding and get right to putting the desk together.

    Put the Desk Together

Alright, so now you have all the pieces of your desktop and they have been sanded down… well the next step is simple. All you need to do is glue all the pieces together, and you will end up with one beautiful desktop. To do this successfully, you are going to have to glue all the pieces of wood together and then use a few clamps to hold all the pieces of wood together. You are going to want to keep the clamps on until the glue dries up.

Also, keep in mind that when you clamp the pieces of wood together with glue in between, some of it is going to come out. When this happens, all you need to do is wipe away the extra glue, This way, you are going to keep everything nice and clean.

Please do make sure that you leave the glue to dry for at least 24 hours before you remove the clamps to ensure that everything is dry and solid.

    Paint the Desk

Alright, so you’ve got your desktop put together. The next step is really simple and probably the most fun because you get to paint your desk in a color of your choice. You are going to want to take your time to find the color of your choice, because you really want to make sure that your desk is painted in a color that you love. Once you’ve found the right color, you simply need to apply a few coats of paint to your new desk. Once the desk has been painted, you are going to want to leave it to dry for a full day or two.

    Step 2: The Legs

    Create the Legs

Alright, so now that the desktop is done, the next stage is to get the legs of your new desk sorted. You are first going to want to decide on how long you actually want the legs of your new desk to be. Once you’ve decided that the next step is actually cutting the legs out of the wood you bought,. Again, there is nothing really difficult about this.

Make sure that the desk is tall enough so that when you are sitting on your chair, your legs will be able to comfortably fit underneath the desk. You definitely don’t want to be in a position where you build the desk only to realise that you are going to have to take off the legs and do them again because your legs don’t fit comfortably underneath the desk.

The last step is to paint the legs in the same color as your desk.

Connect the Desktop to the Legs

This is pretty much the last step to building your new office desk. All it requires is that you use some wooden screws to connect your desktop to the legs. You will need a few screws for each leg. Make sure that you screw them in properly so that the legs are securely fitted into the desktop.

And that’s all there is to it. As you can hopefully see, it really isn’t that hard to build a beautiful desk that you can put in your office space and do it for practically nothing, especially when compared to buying a new desk. All you really need to do is take your time and follow the instructions as I’ve laid them out in this article. Do this, and in no time you’ll have a beautiful desk that you can be proud to tell others that you made yourself!
